The Antelope in the Living Room by Melanie Shankle
I bet you loved Sparkly Green Earrings too, didn’t you? If by some chance you haven’t read Melanie Shankle before, let me give you a crash course: Mel is a HILARIOUS blogger who tells the best stories from her life in San Antonio, Texas. Much like her blog, her books are anecdotal and so funny and sweet.
The Antelope in the Living Room is all about her and her husband Perry.
Let me tell you about Perry. I like him so much. The first time I ate dinner at the house, he prayed for the weather. I’d never heard anyone do that. But I’m not from Texas and my daddy works in an office, not in a field or outside. And he talked about taking his daughter hunting and we talked about youth ministry and we talked about boys. He’s just a nice guy and I often wished I lived closer to San Antonio so I could stop by and eat dinner once a week or so.
I like memoirs in general because I like reading about someone else’s life experience. But to read about Mel and Perry was extra special to me. And extra hilarious. My gracious there are few humor writers that I can’t put down right now, and Melanie is one of them. But this book is more than just humor- it’s sweet and honest and real.
Here’s the trailer- don’t you just love Mel’s voice? (Subscribers- there’s a video here. Click on over, yo.)
I’m not married (had you heard?) :). So I can’t say “THIS BOOK IS SO TRUE TO LIFE!” and “I RELATE SO MUCH!”, but I can tell you that the whole thing feels true. And I still really really enjoyed reading about the progress that happens in a decade of marriage.
The Antelope in the Living Room is the kind of book I want to read again this summer at the beach, when I can read for hours with no interruption. This is one of those non-fiction books that reads like a movie or a novel. Once you pick it up, you will wish you had all the hours to read it through.
